With the digital age in photography, the processing of images is now in the hands of photographers. This is the thrill for Shirli, to experiment with the image, taking out the colour to let the subject show through more dramatically, burning, dodging areas for light and contrast with instinct and creating another canvas to her eye.

De-saturating the colour is almost more ‘untainted’ to her, leaving the subject of the image with no distractions, the textures reflecting more. It’s personal and subjective and there are no rules. African faces are a subject that she predominantly enjoys working with. Please view Shirli's image portfolios on the dropdown menu or the links below.

“It’s not that I don’t enjoy colour, but if I do use it, I like to push it absurdly. My life is black or white, in-between is a rare state for me. I don’t care about conventions but what is right for me, it’s personal and you like it or you don’t. I process according to what I feel is pleasing or what is poignant on that moment of taking the shot. I see what I want of the shot when I look through the lens, already deciding how I would like to process and create it into the story I want out of it.”
